Bashundhara Tissue and Bashundhara Shuvosangho jointly organised a tree plantation and sapling distribution programme at Government Azizul Haque College in Bogura on Tuesday as part of their nationwide afforestation campaign to help combat climate change.
Held on the college campus under the theme "A Greener Tomorrow", the programme was attended by teachers, students and leaders of different student organisations.
College Principal Prof Mahfuzul Islam inaugurated the programme as the chief guest. Vice-Principal Prof Shamsul Alam and lecturer of the Physics Department and adviser to the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Government Azizul Haque College unit Asadullah Al Gani attended as special guests.
Speaking at the event, Prof Mahfuzul Islam stressed the importance of tree plantation in ensuring a liveable planet for future generations.
"If each of our 40,000 to 42,000 students plants a tree, or two students jointly take responsibility for one, we can build a vast green landscape. Trees are essential for our very existence," he said.
As part of the day-long programme, more than 100 fruit-bearing saplings, including guava, blackberry, lemon, almond, orange, tamarind, mango, litchi and olive, as well as flowering plants such as flame tree, hibiscus, Spanish cherry, marigold and cape jasmine, were planted and distributed across the campus and two female dormitories.
Muniruzzaman, general secretary of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Government Azizul Haque College unit, said the initiative was part of the organisation's nationwide greening campaign aimed at making educational institutions more environmentally friendly.
Praising the initiative, adviser Asadullah Al Gani said regular tree plantation was essential to addressing the global impacts of climate change and commended the enthusiastic participation of students.
Leaders of different student organisations, including Government Azizul Haque College unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, and members of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho college unit were also present.
