A discussion on climate change and its impacts was held in the island district of Bhola on Tuesday, with the aim of raising students' awareness about the devastating effects of climate change and encouraging greater youth participation in environmental protection.
The Bhola district unit Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised the event, where students participated and shared their views on the climate crisis, environmental pollution, global warming, and the role of young people in building a sustainable future.
Speakers highlighted both the global and national context of climate change, saying that the continuous rise in global temperatures, sea-level rise, cyclones, storm surges, river erosion, irregular rainfall, and prolonged drought are among the major consequences of climate change.
They noted that Bhola, as a coastal district of Bangladesh, is already experiencing many of these impacts.
They stressed that raising public awareness and adopting environmentally friendly lifestyles are essential to addressing these challenges.
The speakers also emphasised that students have a vital role to play in building a greener and more liveable world.
They said that if young people spread messages of environmental conservation within their families, educational institutions and communities, it would contribute significantly to mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change.
They underscored the importance of reducing unnecessary plastic use, planting trees, preventing the waste of water and electricity, maintaining a clean environment, and developing eco-friendly habits.
During the discussion, students asked various questions about the causes of climate change and possible solutions. The speakers responded with practical examples and encouraged the participants to take an active role in protecting the environment.
The event was chaired by Bhola district unit Shuvosangho Senior Vice-President Mir Abid Hossain Rafi.
He said, "As part of its social responsibility, Bashundhara Shuvosangho has been implementing various programmes to promote education, humanitarian values, environmental conservation, and youth leadership.
“We will continue to organise awareness programmes, seminars, tree plantation campaigns, and other environment-friendly initiatives to engage students on important issues such as climate change."
Among those present were Shuvosangho vice-presidents Ashrafun Nahar and Md Jahid Hasan; joint general secretaries Ifaz Hossain and Fazle Rabbi; Office Secretary Nur Fatema; Finance Secretary Safa Islam; Action and Planning Secretary Israt Jahan Nuha; and Environment and Climate Affairs Secretary Md Sabbir.
