The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Tuesday sentenced Hasanul Haq Inu, president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD) and a minister from the ousted Awami League regime, to 10 years in jail for crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 mass uprising.
The three-member ICT-2, headed by its chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, pronounced the verdict in presence of Inu in the case filed over the killing of six people in Kushtia.
Inu, who served as the information minister in Hasina government, was found guilty of orchestrating and ordering crimes against humanity, including targeted killings during the mass uprising that led to the fall of the government.
Six people were killed and several others injured in Kushtia during the 2024 mass uprising. Following the killings, a case of crimes against humanity was filed against Inu at the ICT, and investigators later submitted their report. The formal trial in the case began on 30 November 2025.
Police arrested Inu on 26 August 2024 from Uttara area in the capital. Later, he was shown arrested in the crimes against humanity case.
The tribunal had also framed charges against Awami League’s joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif and three other AL leaders in the same incident in a separate case.
Inu, the sole accused in the case, was brought from the holding cell to the tribunal courtroom and placed in the dock at 1:42pm. About 10 minutes later, the tribunal began reading out its 211-page verdict.
Justice Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir, the second member of the International Crimes Tribunal-2, read out the eight charges brought against Inu, while the tribunal's first member, retired District and Sessions Judge Md. Manjurul Bashid, presented key witness testimonies and reviewed the evidence considered by the court.
