DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has said that evicting the battery-powered rickshaws from the capital is not possible by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) alone.
He said that a coordinated effort by all the concerned agencies is needed to solve this problem.
He said this in response to questions from journalists after inaugurating the vehicle monitoring program and filing traffic cases through AI cameras on Lake Road in Mohammadpur in the capital on Tuesday.
The DMP Commissioner said, “Regular operations are being conducted against battery-powered rickshaws. However, it is not possible for the police alone to solve this problem. Work is underway in a coordinated manner in this regard.”
He said, “Artificial intelligence (AI)-based cameras have been installed at 18 important intersections and crossings in the capital. Since the introduction of these cameras, about 1500 cases have been filed and 38,000 summonses have been issued.”
According to DMP sources, the Traffic Department has started using AI technology on an experimental basis at various intersections in Dhaka since May 7. In case of violation of traffic laws, the vehicles concerned are being identified through cameras. Later, cases are being filed in the name of the vehicle owner using a digital system.
The DMP Commissioner has said that after the introduction of AI cameras, the tendency of obeying the law at traffic signals has increased. Although earlier, traffic members struggled to stop vehicles at signals, the situation has improved now.
