Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a blood grouping campaign for school students in Bhangura upazila of Pabna on Sunday, identifying the blood groups of more than 400 students of Pukurpar Ideal School.
The initiative was implemented with the overall support of the Bhangura unit of the Volunteers Association of Bangladesh (VAB).
Members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho said Pukurpar Ideal School is one of the largest secondary schools in the upazila. As the institution is located in the Chalan Beel region, many students come from underprivileged families with limited awareness of basic healthcare.
To promote health awareness among students, Bashundhara Shuvosangho partnered with the Volunteers Association of Bangladesh, an organisation working to improve the quality of secondary education, to conduct the blood grouping programme.
They also said the organisation plans to extend healthcare support to the students in phases in the future.
Assistant Teacher Abul Kalam Azad welcomed the initiative, saying everyone should know their blood group as it can save valuable time during medical emergencies requiring blood transfusions.
"This is a very important initiative because knowing one's blood group makes it much easier to arrange blood during emergencies. I thank Bashundhara Shuvosangho for organising this programme," he said.
Liton Ahmed, manager of the Bhangura unit of the Volunteers Association of Bangladesh, said the organisation has been working to improve secondary education and student welfare.
"Bashundhara Shuvosangho has earned a good reputation through its social and humanitarian activities. We are pleased to support this initiative," he said.
Bashundhara Shuvosangho Bhangura upazila President Ariful Islam said the initiative was inspired by the recent aircraft accident at Milestone School in Dhaka, where emergency medical treatment for several students was reportedly delayed because their blood groups were not immediately known.
"With that experience in mind, we decided to identify the blood groups of school students so that they can receive timely medical assistance if needed in the future," he said, thanking the Volunteers Association of Bangladesh for its support in implementing the programme.
