The government is committed to ensuring social security for the poor and backward communities and is working under a specific plan to achieve this, Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain said.
He made the remarks on Sunday in the National Parliament while responding to a starred question from government party lawmaker Shahadat Hossain of Lakshmipur-1.
The minister said the government aims to gradually bring the poorest and most deserving elderly people, widows, husband-beaten women, and persons with disabilities under the 100 percent allowance program.
Despite resource constraints, he said, the government is increasing both the number of beneficiaries and the allowance amount each year based on budget allocations so that more indigent people can benefit from the social security program.
