The International Day of the Girl Child 2024 is being observed globally on Friday with a theme ‘Girls' Vision for the Future.’
This year, the theme is to listen to girls and invest in proven solutions accelerating progress towards a future in which every girl fulfills their potential.
As part of its initiatives, Shuvosangho, one of the country’s largest voluntary organisation funded by Bashundhara Group, marked the day to highlight the voices, contributions, and leadership of girls in the society.
Underlining the importance of the day, a workshop was held at Bashundhara Shuvosangho School in Mirpur section 14, Dhaka on Friday morning, to raise awareness among girls about their rights and responsibilities.
Around 50 girls of Bashundhara Shuvosangho School participated in the workshop that also included sessions of singing songs, recitation of poetries and discussions.
Mosa Bani Akhter Kotha and Fauzia Faisal Flora, members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho Kafrul Thana unit, led the session, covering important topics, including basic rights, poverty, child marriage, discrimination, reproductive health, and the responsibilities of children to the country.
“The today’s girl children are the future for the coming days and there is no chance to neglect them as they are progressing fast,” said Bani Akhter Kotha.
Bashundhara Shuvosangho is tirelessly working to ensure proper education, one of the five fundamental rights, for the underprivileged children in the society, she said.
During the workshop, she encouraged the girl children to stand in the society keeping heads high and work for the betterment of the country, overcoming the challenges, like child marriage and poverty.
Taking part in the session, Flora said, “We want to build a children-friendly country that will ensure fundamental rights of the children.”
The right to education for girls has not yet been fully established at the family or state level, as many girls are still being married off before the age of 18, she said.
“Many people in our society still believe that education is unnecessary for women after their marriage. We want to change the mindset and shift people’s thinking process,” she said.
The programme was arranged involving the students of Bashundhara Shuvosangho with an aim to make the girl children aware about their rights and responsibility to the society and the country, Flora added.
Selina Akhter, Tania Akhter, Bithi Akhter teachers of the Shuvosangho School, Rufaida Akhter, Rafia Tasnim Umme Raihan Tahera, Shwapna Akhter Sumaiya, Nabiha Nawal, Rifah Nanjiba Abika, Wali Ullah Khan, Sakib Sadman Tahsin, Nazmul Hasan Maruf and Sajibul Islam Mohsin, Shuvosangho members of Kafrul Thana unit, among others, were press at the programme.
