Secretary General of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has criticized the chief adviser's statement on the upcoming election, calling it unclear and lacking direction. He pointed out that the announcement of elections between December and June without a clear roadmap does not address the country's ongoing crisis. BNP has repeatedly demanded a transparent election plan, warning that failure to provide one will only deepen political uncertainty.
Speaking after paying respects at the grave of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman on Independence Day, Mirza Fakhrul emphasized that BNP’s demand for elections is not about gaining power but ensuring the people's right to vote. He stressed that only an elected government can resolve the nation’s challenges.
“The fascist government has ruled through oppression for 15 years," he said. "They have committed killings, enforced disappearances, and repressed the opposition to stay in power. We saw how, in July, student protests led to an end to such rule. Now, we hope the interim government will take the necessary steps to hold fair elections soon.”
On behalf of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, Mirza Fakhrul extended his best wishes to the nation, expressing hope that democracy would soon be restored. He reiterated BNP's commitment to a truly representative parliament and government, insisting that elections must serve the interests of the people.
