The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has found a massive amount of wealth of the former Director General of the Special Security Force (SSF) Lt Gen (Retd) Md Mujibur Rahman and his wife Tasrin Mujib.
Sources at the ACC said that Mujibur Rahman and his wife own a 4,050 square feet flat in Mirpur, along with 10 plots in Mirpur, Cantonment, Khilkhet, and Purbachal areas. The couple also owns another flat in the Cantonment area, a house in Purbachal, and a tin-shed house in Savar.
Alongside these properties, the ACC investigation found a huge amount of financial transactions in 15 bank accounts of Mujibur Rahman and his wife Tasrin Mujib. Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on August 5 last year, Mujibur has been in hiding.
According to the ACC, Mujibur amassed illegal assets in the names of his family members through irregularities and corruption by abusing power during his tenure in various key government positions. Significant amounts of bribe money have been deposited and withdrawn from Mujibur and his wife’s bank accounts. The anti-graft body has already filed an appeal to the court to confiscate the couple’s two flats in Dhaka, 11 plots, and the house in Savar. Besides, the ACC has petitioned the freezing of their 15 bank accounts.
On Monday last, ACC Deputy Director Mohammad Sirajul Hoque submitted an application to the court seeking to crock and seize movable and immovable assets of Mujibur Rahman and Tasrin Mujib.
Mujibur served as the Director General (DG) of SSF until the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government. He, later, was transferred from the position of GOC at the Army Training and Doctrine Command in Mymensingh. On September 12, he was dismissed from service. Earlier, he served as the Quartermaster General at the Army Headquarters and held positions as Additional Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
ACC sources said Mujib and his wife have multiple plots in different parts of Dhaka. Of these, seven plots belong to Tasrin Mujib, located in the Baunia Mouza area of Dhaka Cantonment. The largest size of these plots is 7.5 katha. The value of this plot has been shown only at Tk 98.25 lakh. Apart from this, Tasrin owns a flat in the Joar Shahara area of Dhaka Cantonment.
Mujibur owns a 4,050 square feet flat in the Matikata area of Mirpur, which he valued at Tk 1.8 crore. He has also three plots in the Matikata, Cantonment, and Khilkhet areas. His largest plot, measuring 7.5 katha, is located in Khilkhet. Alongside these properties, the former SSF DG owns another plot and a house in Purbachal, as well as a 5-decimal plot with a tin-shed house in Savar.
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said, "No government or military-civilian official can amass such massive wealth solely through a salaried job without corruption. There may be justifications for wealth amassing, but even if he held top positions in peacekeeping missions, such an enormous fortune is impossible to acquire. Corrupt officials must be given exemplary punishment. Those sheltered and facilitated their corruption should also be brought under the law."
