President Donald Trump stated on Friday that his adviser Elon Musk should not have access to U.S. war plans due to his business interests, marking a rare acknowledgment that Musk’s role in the administration will have restrictions.
Trump made the remarks during an Oval Office meeting about the development of a new fighter jet, refuting reports that Musk would be briefed on how the U.S. would handle a potential conflict with China. While praising Musk as a patriot, Trump pointed to his businesses, particularly Tesla, which is expanding its presence in China, as a factor that could make him vulnerable to foreign influence.
Previously, Trump had dismissed concerns about Musk’s conflicts of interest, stating that the entrepreneur would avoid sensitive areas when necessary. However, his latest remarks suggest a shift in approach.
Musk visited the Pentagon on Friday morning to discuss cost-cutting initiatives within the Department of Government Efficiency. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that Musk’s visit focused on innovation and efficiency, while Musk himself told reporters he was willing to contribute in any way possible. He declined to comment on whether he had received classified intelligence regarding China.
Musk has played a central role in Trump’s push to streamline government operations, spearheading efforts that have led to widespread layoffs and program cuts. While some have criticized his aggressive cost-cutting measures, Trump's supporters view them as necessary reforms. A senior defense official stated that between 50,000 and 60,000 civilian jobs in the Defense Department are expected to be eliminated.
