General Dynamics Electric Boat has secured a $1 billion contract modification from the U.S. Department of Defense to procure long lead time materials for the Virginia-class Block VI submarines. The agreement supports efforts to strengthen the U.S. Navy’s submarine fleet by ensuring a steady supply of critical components.
Mark Rayha, president of General Dynamics Electric Boat, in a statement informed this emphasizing the importance of the contract in sustaining the submarine industrial base, allowing suppliers to invest in production capacity and materials. He highlighted that consistent funding is vital for maintaining the high-rate production levels required by the Navy.
Virginia-class submarines are designed to meet modern mission demands, including anti-submarine and surface warfare, as well as special operations support. As the prime contractor and lead design yard for the Virginia-class program, General Dynamics Electric Boat constructs the submarines in collaboration with HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia.
