Gaza’s Government Media Office has said Israel’s decision to close all border crossings with the enclave is having “catastrophic consequences” for food security as well as environmental and health services, reports Al Jazeera.
The statement said 85 percent of Gaza’s population of 2.4 million lost access to basic food items as the distribution of food aid was halted. More than 90 percent is without a source of clean water after Israel destroyed 719 water wells.
Additionally, 34 hospitals and 80 health centres were destroyed and are currently out of service. The entry of medical supplies and specialised surgeons has been prevented. Sewage networks were also destroyed, raising the likelihood of diseases.
“We call on the United Nations, human rights and humanitarian organisations, and all free nations to immediately pressure the occupation to open the crossings and allow the entry of humanitarian aid, before this humanitarian catastrophe turns into a widespread famine and an unprecedented disaster in modern times,” the statement said.
