The public holiday on August 15, which marks National Mourning Day, has been canceled in the wake of the ouster of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in the face of student-people mass upsurge.
The decision was taken during the first meeting of the advisory council of the interim government, chaired by Chief Adviser Dr. Mohammad Yunus, at his official residence, the State Guest House Jamuna, on Tuesday evening, Daily Sun reports.
The Ministry of Public Administration will soon issue a gazette to this effect in light of the decision.
The 15 August massacre was not commemorated for 20 years from 1975 to 1995 at the national level.
The day was declared National Mourning Day by the Awami League when it came to power in 1996, but it was again scrapped by the BNP-Jamaat coalition government in 2001.
Later, the day has been observed as the National Mourning Day since 2008 following a High Court order.
Over the past 15 years, Awami League has been observing the day with various programmes whole the month.
Earlier on Monday, several leaders of different political parties, including BNP held a meeting with Dr Mohammad Yunus, chief of the interim government, and expressed their opinions to cancel the public holiday.
