ABM Mostafa Amin, a key leader of the group that planned a mass gathering in the capital’s Shahabagh by enticing participants with interest-free loans, has been arrested by police on Monday.
Officers from Shahbagh Police Station have arrested Mostafa Amin, the convener of Ahingsha Gonoobbhuthan Bangladesh, confirmed the police station’s Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Khalil Mansur.
Khalil Mansur said primary investigation has confirmed ABM Mostafa’s involvement in the scheme, which was potentially aimed at unsettling the interim government, and disrupting public order.
Past Monday midnight, hundreds of public transports were barred from taking villagers from across the country to the Shahbagh intersection. Dhaka University students and law enforcers intervened to prevent the vehicles from moving further and persuade the passengers to return to their village homes.
The villagers claimed they submitted TK1,000 each to secure interest-free loans of between Tk1 lakh and Tk1 crore. The also agreed to gather at Shahbagh to secure the loan, as demanded by the scheme planners.
