The High Court has dismissed a writ petition filed by Matiur Rahman, former member of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and president of the VAT Appeal Tribunal, seeking permission to travel abroad. Rahman’s request was linked to the ongoing investigation into the "goat scandal," in which allegations of corruption arose following a viral video of his son buying a goat for Tk 1.5 million before Eid-ul-Azha.
The ruling was issued on Monday, November 25, by a bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Mubina Asaf. Rahman, along with his wife Laila Kaniz Lucky and son Ahmed Taufiqur Rahman Arnab, had been banned from traveling abroad by the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court on October 21. The travel ban was imposed after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a petition, citing an ongoing investigation into the family's assets.
In response, Matiur Rahman and his wife challenged the travel ban in the High Court. However, their writ petition was dismissed on the grounds that it was not raised during the court's hearing.
Matiur Rahman was removed from his position at the NBR in July following the controversy surrounding the goat purchase. He was subsequently sent into retirement by the Ministry of Finance’s Internal Resources Department.
