Bashundhara Shuvosangho has organised a discussion in Bandarban focusing on the practice of the mother tongue of ethnic minority groups.
Members of the social volunteer platform conducted the meeting on the Shaheed Minar premises of Government Women's College in the area on Thursday, on the eve of International Mother Language Day on 21 February.
Notable among the ethnic groups are Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Tanchangya, Kheyang, Lusai, Bam, Mro, Khumi, Chak, and Pankhwa, each having its own language and diverse culture.
Balaghata Bilkis Begum High School Acting Principal Anwar Hossain was the chief guest, while local unit President Ui Singh Marma presided over the session.
“We Bengalis and small ethnic groups of different communities have been living with great sincerity and collectively celebrated the International Mother Language Day on 21 February. This year too, we will not deviate from celebrating the day with due dignity along with all communities and students,” said Anwar Hossain.
Ui Singh Marma said that language carries him like a mother and gives him a new birth as a human being. “That is why that language becomes his mother, hence its name mother tongue,” he said.
Local unit Organising Secretary U Aung Singh Merma, Senior Assistant Teacher Bisuddhanand Barua, Assistant Teacher Zahirul Haque and members Swarna Chakma, Robin Tanchangya, U Hla Shai Marma, and Chandrima Barua were present on the occasion.
