National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has left Dhaka for Tehran to attend the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
He departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 7:30am on Thursday.
Ayatollah Khamenei was born on April 19, 1939, in Mashhad, northeastern Iran. He died on February 28 this year at the age of 86 in a US-Israeli airstrike.
Following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Khamenei played a pivotal role in Iran’s new political system. He briefly served as defence minister in 1980 before becoming supervisor of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War. He later served as Iran’s president.
Following the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, Iran’s Assembly of Experts appointed Khamenei as the country’s Supreme Leader, a position he held until his death.
The Speaker is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on July 4 after attending the funeral.
