Malaysia has announced a series of new measures to strengthen the management of foreign workers while balancing national interests with the needs of the industrial sector.
Following a special meeting on Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government had finalized the membership and terms of reference of the Cabinet Committee on Foreign Workers. A one-stop centre for foreign worker management will also operate under the Ministry of Human Resources.
He said the government will reassess demand for foreign workers based on the actual needs of industries to make the recruitment process more efficient, transparent, and accountable.
Zahid also said Malaysia will continue efforts to increase the participation of local workers, develop a more skilled workforce, and expand the use of automation to reduce dependence on foreign labour.
He said the government's objective is to ensure a disciplined and transparent foreign worker management system while maintaining a balance between industry requirements, national security, and employment opportunities for Malaysian citizens.
The deputy prime minister added that all decisions on foreign worker policies will prioritize the country's interests and the welfare of its people.
