The US Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship, rejecting President Donald Trump's effort to limit it in one of the most significant rulings of its 2025–2026 term.
The court also ruled that states may ban transgender women from competing in female school and college sports.
Chief Justice John Roberts said the day marked the release of the court's final opinions for the term, which included several landmark decisions.
In February, the court voted 6-3 to invalidate most of Trump's global tariffs, dealing a major blow to his trade agenda.
In March, it struck down Colorado's law banning so-called conversion therapy, a practice aimed at changing a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.
In April, the justices limited the use of race in drawing electoral maps, a decision that led to new voting maps in several Republican-led states ahead of the November midterm elections.
On the previous day, the court blocked Trump's attempt to immediately remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, ruling that she had not been given due process to contest allegations of mortgage fraud.
The court also handed the Trump administration several victories during the term. It allowed the government to end Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and Syrians living in the United States and permitted Trump to remove officials from some independent federal agencies.
