The Department of Journalism, Media, and Communication (JMC) at Daffodil International University (DIU), in collaboration with the Press Institute Bangladesh, organized two special sessions on crisis journalism and crisis management on November 22, 2024, at Auditorium 71 on DIU’s Sobhanbagh campus.
The event featured Gregory John Simons, Associate Professor in the Communication Science Department at Turiba University, Latvia, as the keynote speaker. Simons discussed the professional and ethical responsibilities journalists face during crises. The session was inaugurated by Dr. Aftab Hossain, Head of the JMC Department, and moderated by Dr. Abdul Kabil Khan, Associate Professor.
In the afternoon, a session titled "Role of Public Relations Professionals During Crises" focused on crisis communication strategies. Prominent PR professionals discussed effective communication tactics and crisis management techniques, sharing insights into notable PR crises and strategies to overcome them.
Simons, addressing the audience, emphasized the need for sustainable communication strategies in today’s media landscape. He highlighted the importance of initiatives like DIU’s to bridge the gap between academia and the professional world, helping students develop the skills necessary for success in the rapidly evolving media industry.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Sakib Mridha, Lecturer, JMC.
