The Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) has launched an initiative to sell hilsa fish directly to customers at subsidised rates, as the price of this highly demanded aromatic fish has exceeded customers' purchasing capacity due to a shortage in supply to the market.
The BFDC will sell hilsa weighing between 0.450kg and 0.850kg at Tk600 per kg at the fisheries section at the BFDC building in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka.
Fisheries Adviser Farida Akhter is scheduled to inaugurate the programme.
BFDC Director Adwaito Chandra Das said that a total of 850 kgs of hilsa will be sold under this initiative in the first phase.-
The fish will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, said the BFDC director, adding that he expects the stock to be sold out within a week.
The Bangladesh Marine Fisheries Association (BMFA) is coordinating with the BFDC to implement the hilsa selling programme under the slogan “Swade Gondhe Atulonio - Elish Kine Houn Dhanya” (Unmatched in taste and aroma—be blessed by buying hilsa).
BMFA President Enam Chowdhury said, “I have joined the programme to provide hilsa to the people at subsidised prices without making any profit.”
“We will expand the programme if this initiative proves successful,” he added.
