South Africa’s Test captain Temba Bavuma has suffered another injury setback ahead of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. A recurrence of an old elbow injury has ruled him out of the domestic first-class final.
Bavuma was scheduled to join his Lions team on Tuesday, but he didn’t arrive in Johannesburg. It was confirmed late on Wednesday night that discomfort in his elbow would keep him out of the final. The news came as a complete surprise to the Lions team management, especially since, just a day earlier, Lions captain Dominic Hendricks had told the media he was excited to play alongside Bavuma.
However, it has not yet been officially disclosed which elbow is affected or how serious the injury is.
Previously, in 2022, Bavuma fractured his left elbow and was sidelined for a long period, missing the tour of England. Later, during an ODI against Ireland in Abu Dhabi, he aggravated the elbow while running, which led him to miss the Test series against Bangladesh.
