"Democracy was buried by taking away all the rights of the people during the last 16 years of the misrule by the ousted Awami government. The people of the country had lost all their rights. Ownership of the country was snatched away from the countrymen, said BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
He said, “Although we got new independence through the victory in the united movement of students and people on August 5, conspiracies from home and abroad against our motherland have not stopped yet. However, if we are united, the conspirators will never succeed.
Tarique Rahman made the remarks in a statement on Tuesday (November 26) marking ‘Shaheed Dr Milon Day' commemorating the 34th martyrdom anniversary of Dr Milon who was martyred during the anti-authoritarian movement in 1990.
He also prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and paid rich tributes.
The BNP leader said the country's democracy was restored by the supreme sacrifice of martyr Dr Milon in the 90s. The 9-year-long anti-Ershad movement got momentum from his sacrifice. The countrymen got the final victory by ousting Ershad. Dr Milon has established democracy sacrificing his lives. Democracy was reestablished in the country led by Begum Khaleda Zia.
“Saheed Dr Milon’s sacrifice will always inspire us. Today, I pay tributes to all martyrs including Dr Milon,” he continued.
