The students from 30 colleges in the capital have gathered at Shahbagh to demand the maximum punishment for perpetrators of violence, rape, and abuse against women.
The students arrived in small processions and took position in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh on Tuesday afternoon.
Most of the protesters are higher secondary students. They were seen chanting slogans such as "Who are you, who am I, we are together," "Justice, justice, we want justice," "Death penalty, death penalty, we demand the death penalty for rapists," "In our golden Bengal, there is no place for rapists," "Light the fire, burn it down," and "Set fire to the rapists' seats."
The students said that they had initially planned to blockade Shahbagh in protest against violence against women.
However, considering public inconvenience during Ramadan, they decided to withdraw the blockade. Instead, they will continue their sit-in protest on the adjacent empty road near the National Museum until the evening.
