Labourers of a factory in Gazipur’s Tongi have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway demanding due wages, Eid bonuses, and protesting against overtime.
Additionally, workers in Gazipur's Maouchak area have blocked the Dhaka-Tangail Highway in protest against assaults on their co-workers.
The incidents occurred on Tuesday morning at separate locations. These protests have caused severe traffic congestion on both sides of the highways.
The protesting workers on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway stated that their February wages remain unpaid, and they did not receive overtime or Eid bonuses. They mentioned that they have repeatedly requested the factory authorities to address these issues, but no action has been taken.
Faridul Islam, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Tongi East Police Station, Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said that law enforcement officials arrived at the scene and attempted to negotiate with the workers to clear the highway.
