Fisheries and livestock adviser Farida Akhter on Tuesday said that the women would have to realize their rights as their own, reports BSS.

She made the statement at a discussion on the occasion of 'International Women's Day-2025' at the livestock auditorium, adding: “The women should not be backward in realizing their rights and there is no alternative to acquiring skill.”

Chaired by Director of the Livestock Directorate Dr Begum Shamsunnahar Ahmed, the discussion was addressed, among others, by Director General of the Directorate Dr Md Abu Sufian, Director (Admin) Dr Md Bayzar Rahman, Assistant Director of BCS Livestock Academy Dr Kawsain Mobassher, Dhaka District Livestock Officer Basana Akhter and Deputy Director Dr Sharmin Samad.

“If the women officers and employees come forward to realize their rights, I would advance for you with double pace," the adviser said, adding that you should not be dependent on others for realizing your rights.

This year's international women's day has begun with some bad events in the country, she said, adding that in some cases the women are insecure in the society.

"A quarter has been trying to project our country in a bad shape with the references of these incidents and there are some reasons to believe it," the adviser added.

"We have no capacity to describe or condemn the barbaric and brutal acts of a section of people of the society," Farida Akhter said.

Urging to introduce direct election for the women in the Jatiya Sangsad, the adviser said the existing system may continue for the shorter period of time.

"The process for ensuring equality among the men and women in the country is very lengthy and it may take the next century for this if such speed is continued," Farida Akhter said, adding that the women are able to raise their basic demands and rights due to the convention of the international women's day.

There is no difference between the men and women in the fascism and it has been created due to structural causes, not for a particular person, she said, adding that the structural causes made a person as the symbol of fascism and that is very unfortunate.
