Robert Pattinson's sci-fi thriller Mickey 17 hit theaters on March 7.Bong Joon Ho, the Oscar-winning director behind ‘Parasite’ has helmed the drama. Adapted from Edward Ashton's novel Mickey 7, the film features Pattinson in the role of Mickey Barnes.
He plays a disposable employee sent on a mission to colonise a new planet. As he dies, one of his clones takes his place. However, the mission is in no way free of chaos, reports the statesman.
Following its release, the film has been raking up big numbers at the global box office, but it still has a long way to go to announce profits.
The sci-fi satire Mickey 17 debuted with a strong box office performance, earning $24 million overseas and over $50 million globally. The film, driven by the popularity of Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson, had a successful opening. It was released in Korea on February 28 and has since grossed $34.2 million overseas and $53.3 million worldwide, which includes $19.1 million from its North American debut.
However, the film’s journey is far from over. Warner Bros. invested $118 million in production and an additional $80 million in marketing. According to Variety, Mickey 17 needs to make around $275 million to $300 million globally to achieve significant profits during its theatrical run.
Variety also provided a breakdown of the film’s performance by region. The top-earning market is Korea, with $14.6 million after two weekends, followed by France with $2.9 million and the UK with $2.7 million. However, the film performed poorly in China, grossing only $1.3 million during its debut.
‘Mickey 17’ also features Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun, among others. Moreover, moving ahead, Pattinson is also a part of Christopher Nolan’s ensemble project ‘The Odyssey’ alongside Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and others.
