Director Mejbaur Rahman Sumon’s acclaimed film “Roid” has achieved another milestone by becoming the first Bangladeshi film to be officially selected for review by the United States’ National Public Radio (NPR), marking a significant moment for the country’s cinema on the global stage.
Distributed in the United States and Canada by Bioscope Films, “Roid” is currently being screened across multiple theatres in North America as the company’s 55th international release. NPR, one of the most influential public broadcasters in the US with around 1,000 affiliate stations, features reviews of films by renowned filmmakers from around the world.
According to Bioscope Films, being reviewed by a globally recognised platform such as NPR enhances a film’s international visibility and can support its journey towards major awards, including the Oscars, BAFTAs and other prestigious honours.
Raj Hamid, head of Bioscope Films, said the company has long been working to establish Bengali cinema on the international stage.
“Every year, we strive to take a Bengali film to the highest global platforms. We know the journey is challenging, but not impossible. The selection of ‘Roid’ by American national radio is a major achievement for us and for Bangladeshi cinema,” he said.
NPR selects films for review after evaluating their artistic merit, context and background. Distributors are contacted to provide a screening copy before the broadcaster decides whether to feature the film.
“Roid” stars Mostafizur Noor Imran and Nazifa Tushi in the lead roles, while veteran actor Gazi Rakayet plays a pivotal character.
