The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Sunday sentenced three police personnel, including ex-DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, to death in a case filed over crimes against humanity committed in the capital’s Rampura area during the July Mass Uprising movement, where two people were killed and two others were injured.
A three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by its chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, delivered the verdict at 12:25pm.
The other members of the tribunal are Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
Those sentenced to death are former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Additional Deputy Commissioner of Khilgaon Zone Md Rashedul Islam and former Rampura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mashiur Rahman.
The tribunal also sentenced former Rampura Police Station Sub-Inspector Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan to life imprisonment, while former Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Chanchal Chandra Sarkar, the only accused currently in custody, was handed a 20-year prison term.
According to the prosecution, on 19 July, 2024, Amir Hossain climbed an under-construction building on the Banasree-Meradia Road in Rampura to escape police gunfire during the student-led mass movement. Police allegedly pursued him and, despite him hanging from steel rods on the roof cornice, an officer fired six rounds at him, leaving him seriously injured.
On the same day, Nadim and Maya Islam were killed in police firing in the Banasree area. Four of the five accused in the case remain absconding.
