Water levels in four major rivers, including the Teesta, are flowing below the warning level, although heavy rainfall forecast for the Rangpur region could cause further rises, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said on Sunday.
According to the FFWC, the Teesta River is flowing below the warning level at the Dalia, Kaunia and Tarapur stations. The Surma River remains below the warning level at Chhatak and Sunamganj, the Kushiyara River at Fenchuganj and Markuli, and the Someshwari River at Kalmakanda.
Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Ganges and Padma
Water levels in the Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Ganges and Padma rivers increased over the past 24 hours and may continue to rise over the next five days. However, they are expected to remain below the danger level.
Sylhet region
The water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers remained stable over the past 24 hours but are likely to rise over the next three days.
The FFWC warned that rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts could cross the danger level, causing short-term flooding in nearby low-lying areas.
Water levels in the Sarigowain, Manu and Jadukata rivers have fallen, while the Dhalai and Khowai rivers have risen and may increase further in the next three days.
Rangpur region
The Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers recorded rising water levels during the past 24 hours, while the Teesta fell slightly.
The rivers are expected to rise over the next two days before stabilising on the third day. Water levels in Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Rangpur districts may cross the danger level within the next 72 hours, raising the risk of short-term flooding in low-lying areas.
Mymensingh region
Water levels in the Someshwari, Jinjiram, Bhulai and Kangs rivers increased during the past 24 hours and may continue rising over the next three days.
The rivers may cross the warning level in Netrokona, Mymensingh and Sherpur districts, temporarily flooding some low-lying areas.
Chattogram region
The Sangu River rose over the past 24 hours, while the Gomti, Muhuri, Selonia, Feni, Halda and Matamuhuri rivers declined.
However, weather forecasts indicate that river levels across the region may rise rapidly over the next three days due to heavy rainfall.
