At least 305 Bangladeshi citizens were killed and 282 injured along the Bangladesh-India border over the past decade, according to a report by the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS).
The report, published on Monday, highlighted the ongoing human rights violations and urged immediate actions to prevent further loss of life.
According to HRSS statistics, prepared based on media reports and its own findings, four Bangladeshis were killed, 10 injured, five shot and 15 arrested in 15 attacks by the BSF on the border from January to March 8 this year.
During this time, three Bangladeshis were killed in attacks by Indian nationals and Khasias on the border. These incidents indicate a fragile situation in terms of border security, the report added.
At least 26 Bangladeshi citizens were killed by BSF, while another 25 got injured last year. Besides, 47 Bangladeshis were shot by BSF and 158 were arrested during this period.
The HRSS found 2020 as the deadliest year at the Bangladesh-India border as some 51 Bangladeshis, the highest in 10 years, were killed by Indian security personnel in the year. Meanwhile, 15 people, the lowest in a decade, were killed in 2018.
Condemning these incidents as violations of human rights and international law, the HRSS called on the Bangladeshi government to take diplomatic measures to end border killings and ensure the safety of its citizens.
The organisation has demanded accountability from Indian authorities and urges international human rights bodies to intervene.
The HRSS further noted that border security should be maintained without the excessive use of force and that both nations must adhere to international agreements to prevent unlawful killings.
The organisation has urged the Bangladeshi government to raise this issue with India at the highest diplomatic level, ensuring the safety of its citizens and upholding their fundamental rights.
