International NGOs operating in Bangladesh have raised serious concerns over the increasing incidents of rape, sexual harassment, and violence against women and children, reports UNB.
These INGOs includes ActionAid Bangladesh, Oxfam in Bangladesh, Plan International Bangladesh, and Save the Children.
In a joint statement, the organizations called for immediate measures to ensure justice, protection, and the safeguarding of human rights for survivors and their families.
The NGOs welcomed the government's recent commitment to a ‘zero tolerance’ policy on violence against women and children. They also appreciated the decision to complete investigations within 15 days and ensure trials conclude within 90 days of the incident. However, they stressed the urgent need for the effective implementation of these commitments.
“These actions follow nationwide protests led by courageous women and girls, along with students, teachers, activists, and rights-based organizations. We stand in solidarity with them,” the statement read.
Citing data from Ain o Salish Kendra, the NGOs highlighted that 294 women and children were subjected to violence in the first two months of 2025, including 96 cases of rape, 44 of which involved children.
They also expressed concern over the rising incidents of moral policing, mob violence, and the misinterpretation of gender justice, which they argue contribute to victim-blaming and discourage survivors from seeking justice.
The statement emphasized that gender-based violence is a grave human rights violation and called for measures to ensure safe mobility, civic freedom, and digital safety for women and children.
Additionally, the organizations demanded a comprehensive child protection mechanism, swift prosecution, and exemplary punishment for perpetrators.
The NGOs urged legal reforms to close loopholes in existing laws and reinforce protections, ensuring that survivors and their families receive justice, safety, and dignity.
