At 8:27 am today (Sunday), Dhaka ranked 15th among cities with the worst air quality, recording an AQI score of 128.
The air was classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” posing health risks to residents, according to the AQI index, reports UNB.
Thailand’s Chiang Mai, Qatar’s Doha, and Azerbaijan’s Baku secured the top three positions on the list, with AQI scores of 171, 162, and 160, respectively.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a tool for reporting daily air quality, indicating how clean or polluted a city’s air is and the potential health effects.
In Bangladesh, the AQI is calculated based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and ozone.
Dhaka has long struggled with air pollution, with air quality typically deteriorating during winter and improving in the monsoon season.
