The University Grants Commission (UGC) has finalized plans to establish Dhaka Central University, set to incorporate seven government colleges from the capital. This decision follows a meeting with a delegation of 32 students at the UGC building in Agargaon on Sunday.
In February 2017, these seven government colleges — Dhaka College, Eden Women's College, Begum Badrunnessa Government Women's College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Mirpur Bangla College, and Government Titumir College — were affiliated with Dhaka University to improve education standards and modernize the system.
However, student protests began in October due to ongoing complaints about irregularities and mismanagement by Dhaka University. As a result, the colleges’ affiliation with Dhaka University was canceled, and in December, the government formed a special committee to review the situation. After months of evaluating feasibility, conducting campus visits, and consulting with faculty and students, the committee laid out a plan for the new university.
Following a call for proposals, the name 'Dhaka Central University' has been chosen for the new institution, which will aim to provide more focused and independent educational opportunities for students in the capital.
