A media report has claimed that more than one thousand Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested in Ahmedabad and Surat in the western coastal state of Gujarat.
Citing Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, India’s state-run news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) reported the update, saying, “The Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in a joint operation overnight on Friday.
It claimed that at least 890 Bangladeshis were arrested in Ahmedabad, while 134 were arrested in Surat.
Harsh Sanghavi said that this is the biggest operation against illegal immigrants in Gujarat so far. He also instructed illegal immigrants living in Gujarat to surrender to the police.
He warned that immigrants living illegally in the state who ignore this order will be arrested and sent back to their countries.
At the same time, the Gujarat minister said that legal action will also be taken against those who shelter illegal immigrants.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with senior police officials of the state through video conference, Sanghavi said, “A detailed investigation will be conducted into the activities of these Bangladeshis in Gujarat.”
Arrangements for their repatriation to their home country will be made soon, he continued.
