Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has extended its support for the Consensus Commission on several matters, including the recommendation for a bicameral parliament.
Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr Syed Abdullah Md Taher said this at a brief press briefing during an interval of their meeting with the National Consensus Commission on Saturday.
Regarding the reform proposal concerning a four-year parliamentary term and the president's tenure, Taher noted that they had conveyed their support for a five-year tenure.
"So far, the discussion on the Constitution has been very fruitful. We have informed the commission of our agreement on the bicameral parliament and are now discussing its nature and structure," he said.
The Nayeb-e-Ameer also said, "Discussions on these issues that are very important for the national interest will continue, because as a major stakeholder, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is considering the issues with great importance and attention."
The meeting was presided over by Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the Consensus Commission.
The members of the commission - Justice Md Emdadul Haque, Badiul Alam Majumder, Dr Iftekharuzzaman, Safar Raj Hossain and Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor (Consensus) Monir Haider were present.
