Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman has stated that the ownership of the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) will not be awarded to anyone. The CPA is only appointing a terminal operator.
“Misleading information is being spread regarding the appointment of an operator for the NCT,” he said while responding to a question about the appointment of a foreign operator at the NCT during a view exchange meeting with journalists.
The program was organized to mark the 138th Port Day at the Shaheed Md Fazlur Rahman Munshi Auditorium in Chattogram on Thursday. During the event, the chairman announced that project work at Matarbari would begin next month, and at the Bay Terminal in November this year.
Emphasizing the need to enhance port efficiency, the CPA chairman noted that many investors are eager to invest in Bangladesh, and the port will need to handle around seven million containers by 2035.
“The tariff war across the globe has opened a door of opportunity for us. In the nine months of this fiscal year, CPA achieved a growth of over 5.5 percent in both cargo and container handling, despite disruptions caused by one month of movement restrictions, floods, and other issues last year,” he said.
“If these opportunities are seized, Chattogram and Matarbari could develop into a Singapore of the future. People will benefit from the Matarbari and Bay Terminal projects for the next hundred years,” he added.
