A Dhaka court has placed former shipping minister Shahjahan Khan on four-day remand in a murder case filed for killing a man named Rafiqul Islam in Badda during July uprising.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate MA Azharul Islam passed the order on Monday morning.
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case, Police Inspector Shafiul Alam of the Anti-Terrorism Unit, produced him before the court seeking 5-day remand. Public Prosecutor (PP) Md. Omar Faruq (Faruqi) argued for the state to grant the remand.
On the other hand, the accused’s lawyer Mizanur Rahman Badal filed an application seeking bail. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail and remanded the accused for four days.
According to the case documents, Md Rafiqul Islam, 37, joined an anti-discrimination student movement rally in front of the Bismillah Hotel in Badda on 19 July 2024. At around 1pm, police along with Awami League cadres opened fire on the rally, injuring many including Rafiqul. He was rushed to hospital, where Rafiqul succumbed to his injuries on 27 August last year.
Rafiqul's uncle Muhammad Lutfur Rahman filed the case with the Badda Police Station against 37 including the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Police arrested Shahjahan Khan from the city's Dhanmandi area on 5 September 2024. He was shown arrested in many cases and already remanded in those.
