The Ananda Mohan College unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised a Reading Session and Quiz Competition on Saturday at the college's Krishnachura Circle.
The event highlighted insightful discussions, book-related knowledge, and thoughtful reflections on literature and philosophy.
Naureen Samanta Soumi, Advisor of the branch and Assistant Professor of Philosophy, served as the keynote speaker. She delivered the welcome address and shared insights into the life, literary works, and cinematic contributions of Zahir Raihan. Praising the initiative, she encouraged continuity in organizing such intellectual activities.
The event also featured Abdullah Al Mamun, a student advisor and senior student of the Mathematics Department, as a co-speaker. He discussed the relevance of Zahir Raihan's timeless novel Arek Falgun in 2024. He elaborated on how the novel reflects the 1971 Liberation War, the anti-autocracy movement of the 1990s, and the ongoing 2024 anti-fascism protests, underscoring the novel's influence on these pivotal historical moments.
The program was moderated by Ahmed Junaid Tanmoy, a Political Science major and student advisor. He highlighted how Arek Falgun portrays the emotional essence of the Language Movement and its historical significance. He further elaborated on how the novel inspired the July Uprising of 2024, with specific lines serving as a beacon for the movement.
Soumatta Ayan Suman, a senior student of the Philosophy department, emphasised the transformative power of reading books in understanding oneself and the world. Nizam Uddin Sourav, a junior Philosophy major, expressed gratitude to Bashundhara Shuvosangho for organizing such creative events nationwide.
The quiz competition involved 25 participants, who answered 15 questions. The top five winners were awarded books as prizes.
The event concluded with musical performances by Al Mamun and Nila Hasan, along with lively discussions and tea gatherings.
The program was presided over by Syed Nafiul Hasan Mubin, President of the Anandamohan College branch. Other key attendees included Vice Presidents Sadman Al Saqib, Jihad Hasan, and Nahid Ferdous Khan, General Secretary Puja Chakraborty Lavanya, Joint General Secretary Sanjida Afrin Zerin, and other executive members of the organisation.
