A 58-day ban on fishing of any species in the Bay of Bengal has come into effect from Tuesday. The ban will continue until June 11. During this period, the government will provide 78 kg of rice per capita to fishermen.
According to a notification by the Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Resources said, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (a) of sub-rule (1) of rule 3 of the Marine Fisheries Rules, 2023, the government has declared a ban on fishing of any species by all types of fishing vessels for a total of 58 days from April 15 to June 11 every year for the proper reproduction, production, conservation of marine fish resources and sustainable fishing in the maritime waters of Bangladesh.”
During the ban, the Coast Guard, Navy and Fisheries Department task force will conduct their patrol activities in the sea.
Bhola District Fisheries Officer Bishwajit Kumar Deb said that the total number of sea-going fishermen in Bhola district is 65,000. These fishermen will refrain from fishing in the sea for 58 days from April 15. During this time, the government has allocated 78 kg of rice per capita for them.
He further said that this ban has been imposed like every other time for the proper reproduction, production, conservation of marine fish resources and sustainable fishing in the maritime waters of Bangladesh.
