Professor Ali Riaz, vice-chairperson of the National Consensus Commission (NCC), stated that while there is a shared goal regarding state reform, there are minor differences concerning the path to implementation.
He emphasized that through dialogue, these differences can be resolved, and based on common ground, a national charter can soon be formulated. Such a charter would pave the way toward fulfilling the nation’s aspiration for state reform.
He made these remarks on Tuesday during a discussion with the National Democratic Movement (NDM) held at the LD Hall of the National Parliament.
Ali Riaz mentioned that the initial phase of the dialogue has begun the process of discussion, saying, "We may continue discussions in stages. We will consider how we can come to a common understanding."
He mentioned that political parties need to clarify certain points in the spreadsheet, stating, "There are certain areas where explanation is needed. At that point, we will be able to clarify the commission’s stance and try to understand your (political parties') positions. Through this process, we will move forward."
Regarding the formulation of the national charter, the Vice President of the National Consensus Commission further said, “Our main goal is to reach a point where we can swiftly create a national charter. Since the tenure of this commission extends until mid-July, we hope to conclude the preliminary discussions by mid-May, after which we will proceed to the next phase.”
The dialogue was moderated by Monir Haider, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor, and was also attended by Commission member Safar Raj Hossain. The NDM was represented by a team of eight members, led by its Chairman, Bobby Hajjaj.
Bobby Hajjaj expressed agreement with most of the proposals made by the National Consensus Commission, stating, “We want to view the reforms from a broader perspective. Through these reforms, we aim to establish a people-oriented system of governance.”
He added, “A major reform is to abolish the fascist force like the Awami League so that such a party can never rise again in Bangladesh, and to eliminate their fascism.”
