Bashundhara Shuvosangho distributed mustard seeds to at least 71 farmers affected by recent flooding in Phulpur Upazila of Mymensingh on Wednesday.
The seed distribution function took place at the hall room of the upazila parishad where Sadia Islam Seema, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) attended as the chief guest.
It was reported that the flooding severely damaged the Aman rice crops of farmers in several critical unions. Even as the water recedes, the rice crops are rotting in the fields.
In response, the Phulpur Agricultural Office has advised farmers to cultivate mustard in the flood affected areas.
The agricultural office encouraged the 71 farmers by providing them with technology for mustard cultivation.
Many farmers are currently facing financial difficulties due to the floods, along with various hardships.
Bashundhara, a leading industrial organisation in the country, gifted each farmer a kilogram of mustard seeds.
During the event, UNO Sadia Islam praised Bashundhara Shuvosangho as a major voluntary organisation.
She said, “I commend the humanitarian efforts of this organisation. Farmers will benefit greatly from this improved mustard seed. This is my first participation in such humanitarian work with this organisation. Thanks to Bashundhara for their efforts.”
Shuvosangho Adviser Agriculturist Kamrul Hasan Kamu stated that the distribution of these high-quality seeds will significantly benefit the flood affected farmers.
Bashundhara Shuvosangho is well-known not only in Phulpur but across the country for its humanitarian efforts, establishing itself as a prominent organization. It also aims to enhance crop productivity throughout the country, he added.
Hafiza Akhter, a female farmer, said that the recent floods destroyed her everything.
“Water was everywhere in our homes. Even as the water recedes, we have lost everything. I will make use of this mustard seed based on the advice of the agricultural office,” she said.
Farmer Sharaf Uddin mentioned that with just a kilogram of seed, he could earn Tk 8,000 to Tk 10,000 from mustard.
“I hope that Bashundhara Shuvosangho will support us in the upcoming Boro cultivation season,” he added.
Also present at the event were Phulpur Upazila Agricultural Officer Faruk Ahmed, senior local journalists Nurul Amin, Khalilur Rahman, Mostafa Khan and Bashundhara Shuvosangho President Ziaur Rahman Panna, among others.
