The Boarder Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel detained AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik, a retired judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, on Friday night while fleeing the country, reports Daily Sun.
"BGB detained Former judge Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik at the border while he was trying to flee to India," BGB-19 Dona Camp Commander Naik Subedar Abidur Rahman confirmed the matter.
On Friday afternoon, around 4:30 pm, Manik arrived at Kanaighat in Sylhet with the assistance of local Awami League leaders. He stayed there until 9:00 pm. Around 9:30 pm, the BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) got information that four to five people were attempting to cross the border illegally. Upon receiving the news, BGB members advanced, and the others fled, leaving Manik behind. At that time, he was detained from a boat.
Justice Manik has been co-accused in several cases filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her cabinet members and top Awami League leaders recently.
He has been at the centre of controversy several times over the years for his judgements and activities during his tenure as judge and after retiring.
