Former food minister Qamrul Islam has been brought to court after an eight-day remand in connection with the death of businessman Abdul Wadud in the Newmarket area of Dhaka. Qamrul was escorted to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (November 26) at approximately 10 am, under special security provided by law enforcement agencies.
Qamrul Islam was arrested on November 18 by a team from the police’s specialized Detective Branch (DB) in the capital's Uttara area. The following day, when he was presented in court, the plaintiff’s lawyer requested a 10-day remand. The court, however, granted an eight-day remand.
Abdul Wadud, a businessman from the Priangan shopping center in Dhaka’s Newmarket area, was killed on July 19 during the anti-discrimination mass movement. A murder case was filed on August 21, naming 130 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several senior leaders of the Awami League.
The case was filed by Abdur Rahman, the brother-in-law of the deceased businessman, at Newmarket police station. Among the accused in the case are Obaidul Quader, Anisul Haque, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Salman F Rahman, and Amir Hossain Amu.
