Bangladesh’s electricity and energy advisor, Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, has assured that there will be no load shedding during Ramadan and the summer months. Speaking at a seminar on renewable energy at the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) building in Uttara on Saturday, he emphasized the need for responsible energy consumption.
Fouzul Kabir advised against setting air conditioners below 25 degrees Celsius, urging people to break the habit of lowering temperatures while wearing suits in hot weather.
He also highlighted concerns over corruption in the power and energy sector, stating that the government has resisted pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to increase electricity prices over the past six months. Despite this, he noted that the government is providing Tk 42,000 crore in subsidies to keep prices stable. Consumers currently pay Tk 8.90 per unit of electricity, while the government purchases it at Tk 12 per unit.
Looking ahead, Khan warned that new gas line connections would come at a higher price. “The government cannot continue to buy gas at Tk 70 and provide it at a low cost,” he said, signaling a potential policy shift in energy pricing.
