Vietnam’s parliament has approved a major $8.36 billion railway project aimed at linking its northern port city of Haiphong to China’s Yunnan province via the border city of Lao Cai. The ambitious project received near-unanimous support from lawmakers, with 455 out of 459 voting in favor.
The railway will span 391 kilometers, with an additional 28 kilometers of branch lines, covering nine localities in northern Vietnam. Officials project that feasibility studies will commence this year, with construction expected to conclude by 2030.
The rail link is poised to bolster economic ties between Vietnam and China, enhancing freight and passenger transport efficiency. As trade between the two nations grows, improved logistics could lower costs and increase cross-border commerce.
Vietnam’s commitment to large-scale infrastructure projects aligns with its broader economic goals, including boosting exports and strengthening regional connectivity. With its strategic location and growing manufacturing sector, the country sees the railway as a critical step toward solidifying its role in global trade.
