Police in Tangail have arrested three individuals in relation to a robbery and molestation incident involving female passengers aboard a Rajshahi-bound bus on the Dhaka-Tangail highway. The arrests followed a series of raids across various locations in Savar late Thursday night.
The detained suspects include Shahidul Islam, alias Mohidul Muhith (29), from Lautara village in Daulatpur upazila, Manikganj district; Md. Sabuj (30), from Ramkrishnapur village, Jajira upazila, Shariatpur district; and Sharifuzzaman, alias Sharif (28), from Tan Genda area, Savar, Dhaka.
Among them, Mohidul has a total of 5 cases against him, including one at Ullapara police station in Sirajganj district and one at Savar Model police station in Dhaka district.
At a press conference on Saturday, Tangail Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman confirmed the matter to journalists.
He said that three people involved in the robbery and molestation incident on a bus have been arrested in various areas of Savar. During the raid, three mobile phones, a knife, and 29,370 taka were recovered from them. They were arrested using information technology and various sources within 24 hours of the case being filed. They will be sent to court for a five-day remand.
In response to a journalist's question, Mizanur Rahman said that the matter of the rape of female passengers on the bus is under investigation. Initially, no evidence of rape was found. However, the molestation occurred. The arrested initially admitted to their involvement in the incident.
Earlier, a case was filed at Mirzapur Police Station in Tangail three days after the robbery and molestation incident took place on a bus. On Friday morning, the bus passenger Omar Ali, son of Mozahar Ali of Chakboraigram in Baraigram upazila of Natore, filed the case as the plaintiff.
On midnight of February 17, a gang of robbers robbed a Rajshahi-bound passenger bus (Mymensingh-B-11-0011) on the Dhaka-Rajshahi-Chapai Road, torturing and robbing the passengers for about three hours. During that time, the robbers molested the female passengers.
