Elon Musk has welcomed the arrival of a Russian delegation in Saudi Arabia ahead of direct negotiations between Moscow and Washington over the Ukraine conflict.
The billionaire reposted a Russian news segment on X showing Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov landing in Riyadh. “This is what competent leadership looks like,” Musk wrote. The video featured journalist Yevgeny Popov asking top Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov about expectations for Tuesday’s talks. Ushakov responded that the priority was to start “a real normalization” of relations with Washington.
Musk, who provided 20,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine in 2022, has since warned against further escalation between Russia and the US, arguing last year that the world was “sleepwalking” into a major war.
Tuesday’s meeting marks the first in-person US-Russia negotiations since Moscow launched its military operation in Ukraine. While the Biden administration has sought to isolate Russia diplomatically, Donald Trump has pledged to broker a swift resolution to the conflict if elected.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday, is expected to hold talks with Lavrov. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed any negotiations held without Kiev’s approval, though he admitted that Ukraine’s chances of victory would be slim without continued American support.
