Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Sunday urged all to observe the Independence Day on March 26 with due solemnity.
In a statement, he said, "On March 26, 1971, the country's best children, the brave freedom fighters and freedom-loving people, resisted the then ruling class to establish democracy, the rule of law, justice, freedom of expression and human rights in the country."
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said the main aspiration of the great Liberation War was equality, human dignity and social justice. People from all walks of life joined the Liberation War with the aim of establishing a country free from hunger, poverty, unemployment and misrule, he added.
Mentioning that the country gained independence in exchange for the blood of millions of people, he said, "If we calculate the expectations and achievements of the people of the country after the 54 years of independence, it is seen that many expectations have not yet been fulfilled."
The Jamaat Ameer said that the country has regained its independence for the second time through the mass uprising of students and people in last July. "Having been freed from the hands of the oppressor who had been oppressing the countrymen for 15 and a half years, the people of the country are able to take breathe freely. The people of the country have regained the right to speak and they can move peacefully," he added.
He said, "On this great Independence Day, we remember with deep respect and honor the brave freedom fighters and all those people whose sacrifice and blood earned independence of the country. We also remember all the martyrs and people who were injured during the movement. We express our deepest condolences to the family members of all the martyrs and the injured and wish the injured a speedy recovery."
Expressing his heartfelt greetings to the countrymen on the occasion of Independence Day, he called upon all branches of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the countrymen to observe the Independence Day with due dignity.
He also prayed to Almighty Allah for the welfare of the countrymen.
