Pakistan has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to uphold its responsibility in implementing resolutions regarding the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. This call follows ongoing tensions after India revoked the region’s special status in August 2019, reports DAWN.
Speaking at a high-level UNSC meeting, Pakistan’s Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi emphasized the need for the council to ensure the Kashmiri people's right to self-determination. He highlighted that the dispute remains on the UNSC agenda and stressed the importance of a UN-supervised plebiscite as outlined in past resolutions.
Fatemi also urged the UNSC to adopt stronger commitments to peace operations, noting Pakistan’s significant role in contributing to global peacekeeping efforts. He warned of the increasing challenges facing peace operations globally and urged the council to take more decisive action.
In a strong rebuttal to India’s claim over Kashmir, Pakistan rejected India’s assertion that the region is an “integral part” of its territory. Pakistani delegate Gul Qaiser Sarvani pointed out that Kashmir’s disputed status is acknowledged by the UN and the international community, and its final disposition must be determined through a plebiscite.
The Kashmir conflict continues to fuel tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, with Pakistan seeking international intervention to resolve the issue in line with UN resolutions.
